Highbridge is to receive a welcome economic boost thanks to business and technology services giant, IBM, which has announced plans to open an IT support centre in the town.
A state-of-the-art facility will open by mid 2010, with the process of recruiting 40 local staff commencing immediately. Plans exist to expand to 50 staff by the end of the year. IBM Global Technology Services will service and repair IT equipment for its clients from across the United Kingdom.
The new facility is part of IBM’s commitment, through South West One, to support the creation of local jobs and wider economic development of the area. South West One is a joint venture between Somerset County Council, Taunton Deane Borough Council, Avon and Somerset Police and IBM, which provides the Authorities with back-office services.
Councillor Ken Maddock, Leader of Somerset County Council, said: "These jobs for Highbridge are a real boost. Highbridge is one of the most deprived areas of the county and these jobs will make a real difference to local people."
